Below are answers to some common questions about using the EMDR Academy app.
See how to navigate the app and use its key features.
- What is the EMDR Academy App used for?
- The EMDR Academy App is used to deliver guided EMDR bilateral stimulation sessions. Therapists can control visual movement, sounds, speed and size, while clients follow the stimulation remotely or in person.
- How do I create a new session?
- On the Dashboard, enter a session label and click Start New Session. This opens the control page and creates a unique client link you can share.
- What should I use as a session label?
- Use a non-patient-identifying ID only (for example, initials with a reference code). Do not include identifiable personal details such as full names, date of birth, address, phone number, or NHS number.
- How does a client join an EMDR session?
- The therapist shares a secure session link with the client. The client opens the link on their device, and the session will start once the therapist begins the animation.
- Do clients need to create an account?
- No. Clients do not need to create an account or log in. They can access the session directly using the link provided by the therapist.
- What does the moving dot or symbol do?
- The moving dot, shape, or emoji provides bilateral visual stimulation, which is a core part of EMDR therapy. Clients simply follow the movement with their eyes as instructed by their therapist.
- Can the therapist control the session in real time?
- Yes. The therapist can start or stop the animation, adjust speed and size, change movement direction and pattern, select colours, and enable or disable sounds at any time during the session.
- What are bilateral sounds and audio?
- Bilateral sounds are alternating audio cues that move from left to right (for example, through headphones). These can be used instead of, or alongside, visual stimulation if appropriate for the client.
- Can the app be used on phones and tablets?
- Yes. The EMDR Academy App works on desktops, tablets, and mobile devices. For the best experience, clients are encouraged to use a larger screen where possible.
- Is there a quick introduction to the app?
- Yes. Use the “Watch our introduction video” button above to see a short walkthrough of the main features and how sessions work.
- What happens if the therapist stops the animation?
- Stopping the animation pauses the bilateral stimulation. The session itself remains active, allowing time for discussion, grounding, or instructions before restarting.
- Can the background or dot appearance be customised?
- Yes. Therapists can customise the dot style, colour, size, movement pattern, and background image or colour to suit the client's needs and preferences.
- Is the session secure and private?
- Yes. Each session uses a unique, secure link. Only people with the link can access the session, and no recordings are made unless explicitly enabled by the therapist.
